Five years in the making [and 100 years since its original publication] comes the epic 36 artists interpretation of James Joyce’s 1907 collection of poems charting love from innocence to experience. With contributions from major established artists (Mercury Rev, Ed Harcourt, Peter Buck from REM under the moniker Airport Studies, Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth with Text Of Light, etc) and cult players (Jessica Bailiff, Gravenhurst, Mike Watt, Bardo Pond etc) this represents a sweeping but unified expression of Joyce’s early love-hungry verse. Beautifully packaged double slipcase CD and double gatefold vinyl with artwork by Stephanie Black.
Released: 12th May 08
Virgin Passages create beautifully original soundscapes from often improvised pieces but retain a pop sensibility akin to early Mercury Rev, Spacemen 3 and Jackie O Motherfucker. Distance see them in great pop form with the short and sweet title track followed by the meandering stereolab-alike anthem of 'This Is Not The End Of The World Again' and the neu-folk of the subtely sublime 'Who Do You Love'.
Released: 28th Apr 08
Featuring the renowned scot poet Gerry Mitchell, and some young, highly energetic South London fans of Sun Ra, Coltrane(s) and other free spirits on overdrive, Debbie Leggo's debut release is alive with energy and vitirol. A further 2 10" vinyl releases will follow.
Released: 21st Apr 08
The self-styled ‘gothic-punk-country’ duo from Chicago quickly follow up last year’s Heaven & Dirt double EP (“Celebrations of beautiful sadness” Plan B) with their 4th album, and most immediate album, “I Was A Swallow”
Released: 14th Apr 08
Following the sprawling collection of the Nashville legend's debut for Fire, 'Napolean of Temperance' (Uncut top 30 of 2006), Dave Cloud returns with a shorter but equally warped statement of intent 'Pleasure Before Business'. Again featuring the talents of the Gospel of Power, a collective of Nashville's finest garage fans and rock and rollers (including members of Lambchop), Dave and the band let rip with more "transcendental psychedelic primitivism" (Sunday Times!) ranging from disturbed innocence in covers ('Yummy Yummy Yummy') to slinky perversion ('Orgy'). A true original, and "the last genuine lost genius " (Sunday Times).
Released: 17th Mar 08
The Fire records/Various Production partnership in dark mash-up continues with this (relatively) more upbeat dancefloor-ready 7". Another Bonesy classic image, this time a suitably playful and disturbing cover. Sonically, it’s nasty rather than dark; it’s a stormer of electro-popping stomp warped by Dave Cloud’s characteristic breathy and gravelly vocals and attitude. The lo-fi original on side B (from last year’s Napolean Of Temperance) is a distorted disco classic karaoked by a loose-screw genius who seems to be in some sort of party/war zone.
Released: 10th Mar 08
"The Beautiful Trustful Future" is a slow building, eleven song work of rich intensity, benevolent passion, wry and occasionally uncomfortable observations... and love. Opening with "Arrival", an emotionally fragile break up song, the album weaves its way through London’s commuter landscape, bustling anonymous travel that affords countless hours for observation and contemplation. Four years have passed since David Hurn’s last album "He Was A Woman" wooed both press and public with its delicate charm and heart-scything lyrics. Despite numerous singles and E.Ps, this is Hurn’s first full length since "He Was A Woman".
Released: 25th Feb 08
First taster of the upcoming album 'Pleasure Before Business', due out later this year, Cloud and his Nashville gang (featuring members of Lambchop and Clem Snide) blast out a dirty-ass garage riff declaring sex as unnecessary. This arguable form of liberation is further confused by the salivating B-side 'Lavender Clothes' from last years epic 'Napolean of Temperance' collection (Uncut top 30 of 2006, 4/5 in Sunday Times).
Released: 4th Feb 08
Follow up to Scalpel Slice (7.5/10 Pitchfork). The return of Gerry Mitchell's collaboration with Little Sparta includes the cult single 'Feasting On My Heart' (Single Of The Week in Playlouder, Norman Records AND Boomkat). Look out for the upcoming Various Production (XL) remix of the same song on the 7" single.
