Black Lips will release Season of the Peach (Deluxe Edition) on August 28th, coinciding with the band’s forthcoming West Coast North American dates. Issued in two volumes, the deluxe edition brings together their latest album, Season of the Peach, with Bebop Armageddon, making the latter available digitally for the first time after its original limited-edition vinyl release.
Bebop Armageddon is a wild companion piece: an eclectic collection of demos, alternate versions and sonic misadventures pulled from the edges of the Season of the Peach sessions. It captures the chaos beneath the polish: the cuts that would not behave or refused to be pinned down.
Reflecting on the release as a standalone work, Cole explains, “Jesus and Mary Chain’s B-sides and rarities record might actually be my favourite release from their discography. So, releasing a compilation of deep cuts is often a worthwhile endeavour in its own right!”
Lead track “Kingdom Come” certainly backs up this theory. It sounds like it belongs on Season Of The Peach with its trademark acid-washed garage and psych rock. As the opening track on Bebop Armageddon, it sets the exploratory and unrestrained tone for the rest of the album. Lyrically speaking, the track reflects on the band’s time spent in Memphis, ruminating on the untimely death of Jeff Buckley. “Kingdom Come” is in homage to “a brilliant musician who had the world at his fingertips.”
This deluxe edition shows Black Lips riding a reinvigorated surge of creativity.
Volume 1 (Season Of The Peach) is a 40-minute rock and roll odyssey, tripping through DIY genres where garage rock meets new wave pop, and disgruntled country shakes hands with epic western soundtracks. The 14-track album captures the energy and spirit of early Black Lips while simultaneously applying new approaches to songwriting.
Volume 2 (Bebop Armageddon) is a weird and wonderful companion piece, showcasing the breadth of Black Lips’ deep cuts and the many musical styles they move through.
More than a release for die-hards alone, it captures the band at their most wide-ranging.
