Vanishing Twin

Vanishing Twin are a London-based psychedelic pop trio, founded in 2015 led by singer and guitarist Cathy Lucas.

Vanishing Twin furthers their exploration of decidedly experimental territories with new album ‘Afternoon X’  set for release on 6th October.

‘Afternoon X’  encounters Vanishing Twin in the throes of a marked creative shift during which each member took on less defined roles and a more collaborative approach, more like the work of three co-producers than a band. Recorded over the course of late 2022 and early 2023, the album is the product of a series of marathon recording sessions by various configurations of Cathy Lucas, Valentina Magaletti and Susumu Mukai. Crafted from a playful balance of humour and rigour, with each member embracing the role of the multi-instrumentalist and process over outcome, ‘Afternoon X’  furthers of trajectory of exploration that has defined their recent releases.

Initially formed by the singer and multi-instrumentalist, Cathy Lucas, in 2015, following a series of line-up changes, Vanishing Twin is now the tightly honed, London based collective of Lucas, the drummer Valentina Magaletti (Holy Tongue, Tomaga, Moin) and bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin).

“This is a band that fearlessly floats in the hazy space between the real world and an imagined one, blurring the line between warmly nostalgic and eerily haunted.”  Pitchfork

“Simply, a masterpiece.”  The Line OF Best Fit

Pursuing creative openness and an expanded palette of references and sources, Magaletti’s metronomic, cycling patterns and the pulse of Mukai’s bass lines remain at the core of their sound, but these rooted rhythms now form the groundwork for the pursuit of greater tonal, textural, and structural range. Harnessing the diverse backgrounds and touchstones of its members – Lucas’ left-field song-craft, Magaletti’s singular approaches to experimental percussion, and Mukai’s long history in the production of electronic music – over nearly a dozen releases since 2016, the band has refined a hypnotic sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop.

Vanishing Twin embark upon a new multifaceted journey that collectively culminates as the bands most forward-thinking and groundbreaking release to date.

“Music like this may not change your life, but it would be most surprising if it did not seriously alter your perspective.”  Popmatters

“A surreal utopian odyssey, relishing in the atmosphere of each haunt, winding seamlessly from one sparkling setting to the next.”  The Quietus

Press Quotes

“Equally at home in the Radiophonic Workshop, Lee Perry’s Black Ark, Conny Plank’s studio and perhaps Arthur Russell’s posthumous space too” Uncut

“Having gone on to explore edgier corners of psychedelia and Krautrock… it leads to the beyond-subconcious realms of Linda Perhacs, 13th Floor Elevators and Can… impressive” ★★★★ Mojo

“Encompassing dreamlike sound collages, electronic oddities and motorik avant pop… Vanishing Twin is a kaleidoscopic entity” The Wire

“Slinking bassline and bristling, filtered synths unfurl into jazz-pop psychedelia” KCRW

“A bold step forward… There is a dichotomy at play of denser, more distorted electronics at one pole and soft, minimalist arrangements at the other; gauzy sounds cut against metallic harshness within songs and across the album.” The Quietus

“Filled with an everyday exoticism, an ambiguous place between loucheness and mystery, conjured from something completely unassuming and unambiguous… injected with a darker, denser elixir” Electronic Sound

“The trio further deconstruct into the type of near-ambient library music the resurgence of Mort Garson’s discography has recently brought to the surface.” Flood

“Not many groups sound more mysterious four albums into their career than when they began, but these shifting, shadowy visions suggest Vanishing Twin have more tricks up their collective sleeve.” ★★★★ AllMusic

“A curious and dazzling trip through otherworldly realms.” Treblezine

“Plucking psychedelic pop and experimental sound structures: ‘Afternoon X’ shimmers coolly between dream pop and cosmic music.” ★★★★ Visions

“Wholly engrossing – by some distance the group’s most singular, experimental and best record to date.” ★★★★1/2 NARC

“It has become a wonderfully cosmic, mind-expanding and mesmerizingly beautiful whole; the warm plunge pool after a visit to the ice cream parlour. Their very best yet!” Subjectivisten
