Jane Weaver reveals early collection reissues: ‘Like an Aspen Leaf’, ‘Seven Day Smile’ & ‘Cherlokalate’

Fire Records’ next instalment in Jane Weaver’s early collection brings together a triptych of the psych-pop veteran’s earlier catalogue. Set for release on 7th August, we journey through her critically acclaimed releases mini-album Like An Aspen Leaf, her debut album Seven Day Smile and 2007 follow up Cherlokalate. Following their release, Jane will be joining Saint Etienne for a number of special live dates this September alongside an appearance at this year’s Moseley Folk and Boia Festival.

Originally released in 2002, mini-album Like An Aspen Leaf is a breathtaking smoky folk opus spiked with Americana longing. Nuanced with the help of members of Elbow, Voice Of The Seven Woods and Andy Votel, it emanates from a baroque pop netherworld, soundtracked by songs of regret, pinpricked by evocative melodies and sumptuous harmonies, and peppered with plaintive swathes of cello and a suitably meandering piano that lurks behind Jane’s minor chords. Now remastered for the modern age, Like An Aspen Leaf  is a bewitching seven-song set filled with aching melancholy. “These are urban poems, reflecting frailties in urban landscapes and finding great passions hiding between the lines of everyday conversation” The Guardian ★★★★

Following with Jane’s first full-length album in 2006, Seven Day Smile is a tongue-in-cheek collection of modern kitchen sink dramas; a wide-ranging set of floating dreampop episodes focusing on bittersweet bedsit tales, beautifully balanced between distant Americana and breathy new folk. Created by Jane featuring collaborations with Doves and Andy Votel, it’s a downtempo mirror of the northern post-Britpop era, with impetuous rhythms and super-real commentary. Seven Day Smile is mix of the unreleased Supersister album sessions and her own home recordings that remains an intensely personal collection of songs.

The second full-length album from Jane Weaver, Cherlokalate “spins songs into fragile and sparkling lullabies” (The Guardian). Inspired by cult folk artists, from Karen Dalton to Linda Perhacs, these ten songs create a unique commentary on personal travails through happiness and pain, all brimming with passion and sorrow. An intimate journey of ethereal folk sweetness, elevated by gorgeous production, aching pedal steel, violins and, in parts, a mutated take on VU-styled rock. “Imagine Julie Driscoll locked in a studio with American Spring and Broadcast.” Uncut
