Lucky Break signs to Fire Records. Listen to ‘Burning String’ and ‘Burning String (Closet Version)’ out now

lucky break is a 23-year-old New York-born indie rock artist based in San Francisco with a knack for homegrown radio hooks, blending classic alt-rock and modern indie pop with a DIY punk collective aesthetic.

Signing to Fire Records, lucky break releases new single ‘Burning String’ alongside B-side on September 16th. Her debut record is set for release next year. Nurtured on 90’s alternative indie, lucky break has the wide-eyed wonder of Bedouine and the nuanced emotionality of Fiona Apple. She also cites Elliott Smith, the Beautiful Chorus, Cameron Winter, and Brian Wilson as influences when revisiting the single for this special B-side.

Mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer, Jessica Thompson (Margo Guryan, X-Cetra, Erroll Garner) and produced by Elliott Woodbridge (Ha Vay, Grace Powers), ‘Burning String’ speaks to the sacrifices of starting over, shedding an old life for the potential that things might be better, even though you’re not sure any of it will be worth it. From the visuals to the finalized track, this new single was produced entirely by women.

‘Burning String’ refers to larger structures and the expectations of others,” she explains. “It’s about seeking freedom, but taking into account the pain that comes with it. It’s about growing, even when you’re really scared and maybe don’t want to. It’s about not being 100% sure what direction you’re even growing in, just being dragged by this burning string towards some fate you know is yours.”

Accompanying B-side, ‘Burning String (Closet Version)’, was recorded in a poignant recording space: lucky break’s childhood bedroom closet. Since she’s relocating following the end of a relationship, she’s using the current boxes of her stuff as a mic stand. “It’s cool to feel like I‘m growing with the song,” she says.

An artist whose creative vision for the project is rooted in musical, visual and philosophical worlds; lucky break envisions an evolving collective that comes together to bring her work to life.

The original cover art for the single, which depicts lucky break with a Burning String tarot card, was inspired by the video she made with her friend, Margaret Gobbell. The accompanying video was shot in one afternoon in her old apartment in LA. For this new take, the cover features a video still upside down, flipping things around a bit. Released alongside the single, the video for ‘Burning String (Closet Version)’ will feature unreleased extra footage from the shoot and fans will also be able to purchase limited edition stickers alongside the tracks.
