Rising artist THALA finds strength in her vulnerability on her first single to celebrate signing to Fire Records. Forging a path in hazy lo-fi indie, this is some of her boldest songwriting yet, rendering deeply personal explorations of the self, in vivid ‘90s influenced indie-rock and looming psych-inspired walls-of-sound.
“I am super excited to announce I have signed with FIRE for this next chapter of my musical journey. They are the fucking best and really get who I am, and even moreso understand who I wanna become! I have never been more proud of anything I have ever done in my life to this date. Fact. And I can’t wait to share it with you” THALA
On the eviscerating new single ‘You Had 2’ –addressed to a mostly-absent childhood figure – THALA transforms her pain into a tender letter of forgiveness, directed at both the subject and her own struggle. “I don’t feel like I owe you – anything, since you were never there to take care of me in the first place,” she sings, “needed your space, but I was just a kid.”
Recalling the tangled indie-rock of Holly Humberstone, Soccer Mommy, and Phoebe Bridgers, THALA has just wrapped up a joint UK tour in support of Independent Venue Week – alongside labelmates Amber Arcades and Hater – with a debut outing at Austin’s SXSW and later Brighton’s The Great Escape festival also on the horizon.
Having already won the backing of BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Wonderland Magazine, and Clash, 2023 sees THALA releasing new music throughout the year.
